Maybe it’s because modular synths are, well, modular that only a select few are instantly recognizable icons — Keith Emerson’s Moog and Steve Porcaro’s Polyfusion come to mind. If ever a new creation deserved to be part of that pantheon, it’s Ichabod. Built by Mattson Mini Modular (though there’s nothing “mini” about it) for Billy Corgan of the Smashing Pumpkins, Ichabod has a whopping 32 oscillators. Scroll down for descriptions of many of its key modules. Bookmark this page, as an interview with designers George Mattson and Stephen Jones is coming soon.

When transporting the monster system to Billy, the crew could resist stopping and posing it in front of Devil's Tower, of Close Encounters fame. We can't say whether Ichabod would have called the aliens more quickly than the ARP 2500 used to play the famous five-note motif from the movie ... or whether it would have called different aliens altogether!
