The Fluid Piano: Bend and Retune Notes On-the-Fly

Image placeholder title

Have you ever wanted to quickly retune a note on a piano as you play? Or bend a note like a guitarist?

Check out the unusual tuning capabilities of the Fluid Piano, played here by Utsav Lal, a keyboardist who focuses on Hidustani classical music.

Invented by Geoffrey Smith the instrument uses a ‘Fluid Tuning’ mechanisms that allows the player to alter each note individually in precise microtonal intervals. In addition to being able to create tunings for musical styles that don't use 12-tone equal temperament, the instrument lets you bend and slide notes.
