To say the music industry is in a state of flux is an understatement. With music streaming becoming more byzantine and proprietary, artists are finding it harder to make a living off their music. To the rescue comes Orfium, a cloud streaming service designed to help artists cut through the red tape and sell their music while properly managing their rights.

When we last checked out Orfium, it was in its beta stage. Its creators’ goal is to provide an open, elegant, and flexible music platform that puts artists and rights holders in control of all forms of promotion, retail, licensing, and distribution of music in the digital age, and to provide fans with the best discovery, sharing, and listening experience.

So, what’s changed since the last time we visited the site?

Here’s a side-by-side comparison of the beta version and current website:

Visitors will find enhanced search options, including searching by genre, subgenre, mood, instruments, vocals, and licenses. Even more sub-genre options exist, which come in especially handy for those seeking music to license. 33,000 artists have already uploaded over 100,000 songs, so there is plenty of content to check out.Orfium is aiming to be a one-stop resource for discovering new artists, building a community, and (perhaps unheard of in this day and age), helping musicians make some money off their songs. Revenue opportunities include retail, licensing, onsite rights management, and offsite rights management. Artists can upload their directly to the site and hosting is free. Even better, Orfium passes 80% of revenue to the artists and rights holders.

Music is free to stream and Orfium visitors have the ability to set their own budget for music they’d like to purchase, rather than the subscription model of most platforms.

When it comes to licensing, Orfium offers three tiers: Standard License, which has a default price of $29.99 and has a production costs plus advertising budget or lifetime direct revenue limit of $2,000; Extended License, which has a default price of $149.99, and has a production costs plus advertising budget or lifetime direct revenue limit of $10,000; and Premium license, which as a default price of $499.99, and has a production cost plus advertising budget or direct lifetime revenue limit of $50,000. Artists also have the option of uploading their music through a label or distributor, or directly.
