On his new Blue Note Records debut Concentric Circles, jazz piano patriarch Kenny Barron continues to surprise, mixing hard-driving swing, Latin grooves and plaintive ballads into a sound all his own. His original composition "Blue Waters" blends sneaky chords with post-bop, blues-drenched sonorities. It's both mysterious and infectious, much like Barron's piano playing itself.
"I think the intent was to show a kind of calming or soothing effect in the beginning of the song," Barron tells us. "It makes me think of the blue/green waters of the Caribbean. Later, there's a slight weather change where it's still calm, but maybe there's a little hot sauce thrown into the mix."
