Our THURSDAY TRACK PICK this week is Emmet Cohen's "Hatzi Kaddish," from the jazz pianist and composer's new album Masters Legacy Series - Volume 2, out March 9th, 2018 on the Cellar Live label.
Cohen writes, "'Hatzi Kaddish' takes its name from a Jewish prayer recited in several forms: As part of the daily ritual of the synagogue, but also, and most commonly, as a mourners' prayer. It isn’t widely known that Ron Carter’s middle name is Levin. He was named after a Jewish pharmacist in his hometown of Ferndale, Michigan, who supplied the Carters with essential medication for their eight children, even though they could not afford it. This particular selection taps into the spiritual connection between the three musicians, and provides a vehicle to elevate their collective musical consciousness."
An alum of the Frost School of Music at the University of Miami, Cohen received his master's degree from the Manhattan School of Music. He was also recently named a finalist in the 2019 American Pianists Awards.
