For the better part of three decades, Grammy-winning pianist, singer and songwriter Eliane Elias has effortlessly married her Brazilian musical roots to jazz, classical, pop and beyond.
Elias' latest release is the all-instrumental Music from Man of La Mancha, out now on the Concord Jazz label. The album features nine individualized interpretations of songs composed by the late Mitch Leigh for the legendary 1960s Broadway musical Man of La Mancha. We're choosing the song "To Each His Dulcinea" from her new release as our THURSDAY TRACK PICK this week.
“'To Each His Dulcinea' became one of my favorite tunes from this album," Elias tells us. "The rhythmic impetus for this arrangement is a mix of Brazilian Baião with a hybrid Latin groove. The intro, midtro and outro are my own inventions inspired in part by the melodic motif of the song. As per the wishes from the composer, I was free to reharmonize and restructure the song to to express my ideas and enhance the romantic essence of the original song. I’ve been enjoying playing this arrangement in my live shows and hope you enjoy it.”
