Peter Martin has made a name for himself across the musical divide - as an acclaimed jazz pianist, a sought-after accompanist, and most recently, an online music educator. For these reasons and more, he's our Talent Scout Artist of the Week.

NAME: Peter Martin

HOMETOWN: St. Louis, MO.

MUSICAL TRAINING: Studies with my Mom and Dad (they're both professional musicians), followed by one year at Juilliard for classical piano performance. Then came a real schooling with jazz vocalist Betty Carter!

FIRST GIGS: Betty Carter, Wynton Marsalis, Joshua Redman.

MUSICAL INFLUENCES: Thelonius Monk, Herbie Hancock, Maurizio Pollini.

WHAT I’M LISTENING TO RIGHT NOW: Miles Davis/John Coltrane The Final Tour.

MY BIG BREAK: Becoming the pianist and musical director for jazz vocalist Dianne Reeves.

LATEST ALBUM & PROJECTS: What Lies Ahead with my trio, and Open Studio, the online jazz instruction site I founded.

FAVORITE KEYBOARDS AND WHY? A Steinway D or B grand piano (its classic sound and feel is hard to beat)! Also the Nord Electro and the Vintage Vibe Electric Piano, which has a fantastic Rhodes sound and feel.

WHAT’S NEXT FOR YOU? I'll be touring the Middle East, Europe and the USA next month with Dianne Reeves. Plus trio reunion gigs with Brian Blade and Chris Thomas in May, and lots of new lessons and artists at Open Studio.

ADVICE TO THE NEXT GENERATION: Practice, listen, and then practice some more!
