She's an acclaimed singer, songwriter and pianist who tours around the globe. Get to know Avery Sunshine, our TALENT SCOUT Artist of the Week.
NAME: Avery Sunshine
HOMETOWN: Chester, Pennsylvania.
MUSICAL TRAINING: I started with private piano lessons at the age of eight, continued throughout high school, and then went on to attend Spelman College in Atlanta, Georgia. I started as a piano major but after a few horrible recitals, I changed my major to philosophy.
FIRST GIGS: When I was 13, I had my first paying gig as a choir director and pianist for the Immaculate Heart of Mary Church in my hometown. I was a freshman in college when I got my second gig as the “dinner music” pianist for a banquet that Jane Fonda was throwing in Atlanta.
MUSICAL INFLUENCES: Here’s the short short short list: Maurice White and Earth, Wind & Fire, the Doobie Brothers, Patti LaBelle, Stevie Wonder, The Clark Sisters, John P. Kee, Michael Jackson, The Winans and Gamble and Huff.
WHAT I’M LISTENING TO RIGHT NOW: DrewtheRew, Bobby Womack, Cousin, Thundercat, James Taylor, Lucky Daye and Justin Gilbert.
MY BIG BREAK: A bunch of tiny breaks.
LATEST PROJECTS: My album Twenty Sixty Four and a collaboration with my good friend Will Downing.
FAVORITE KEYBOARDS AND WHY? My favorite keyboard is the Yamaha CP88 stage piano. From the touch of the keys, to its user-friendliness, to its electric piano and acoustic piano sounds… I feel like that keyboard was made for me.
WHAT’S NEXT FOR YOU? A European tour to France, Italy, Germany, Sweden and the Netherlands! Upon my return, I will be finishing up my next record (with a special appearance by Mr. Nathan East) and preparing for my first live recording on December 28 in Atlanta GA.
ADVICE TO THE NEXT GENERATION: The best part of life is the “figuring it out” part. That’s when you see what you’re really made of.
