NAME: Alice Offley
HOMETOWN: Swindon, England.
MUSICAL TRAINING: Grade 8 piano studies.
FIRST GIGS: Local covers bands and classical music festivals.
MUSICAL INFLUENCES: Nina Simone, Stevie Wonder, David Bowie, Billy Preston, Bill Withers, Kate Bush.
WHAT I’M LISTENING TO RIGHT NOW: A brilliant selection of music! I am on a US tour playing session keyboards and bass and to keep my chops and singing up, I started taking requests and posting videos online from the tour bus - just on my little MIDI keyboard. I love that I'm now inundated with requests from people on Facebook and Instagram. It feels amazing to be able to dedicate songs and connect with people, regardless of where I am in the world. And people/piano fans have great taste, so I'm very inspired!
MY BIG BREAK: I wrote and produced a keyboard EP and released it in my hometown. It was well-received and got me a support slot with Hazel O'Connor, and it introduced me to producers and promoters locally and in London. So I have been able to work with some great creative people.
LATEST PROJECTS: I've been busy writing and recording new songs. I've experimented with guitars and a band, but my new songs are fusing soulful/funky piano with contemporary beats.
FAVORITE KEYBOARDS AND WHY? My first love is the piano, but I totally dig Rhodes and vintage sounding EPs. These have been too heavy for me to physically transport to gigs myself, so I either use a Nord Stage or a Casio Privia. My iRig has been my baby on this trip, as fits in my suitcase and under my arm, and it's compatible with an app on my phone, so I've never felt so portable while away from my piano!
WHAT’S NEXT FOR YOU? I'm working on my second album. My first release Skin & Bones was stripped-back solo piano and vocal, but I've been honing my style, mixing beats with acoustic piano and I'm excited for people to hear it!
ADVICE TO THE NEXT GENERATION: Practice and listen as much as possible. If you are drilling scales and technique exercises, remember how valuable they are going to be to you when you are performing. Also set mini goals so it's a measurable and fun thing. Don't judge yourself harshly, just trust things are working. Try to connect with your keyboard so it's part of your language. Ultimately find what feeds your musical soul, and do that.
