HOMETOWN: Dublin, Ireland
MUSICAL TRAINING: Newpark Music College and Pulse Recording College.
FIRST GIGS: My first gigs were performing my own music, where I sang and played keyboards and guitar. I also played with a six-piece funk/soul band called Everyday People that I set up and played drums in.
MUSICAL INFLUENCES: Stevie Wonder, the Meters, Nina Simone, Chopin, Debussy, Sly and the Family Stone, Donal Lunny, John Renbourn, Miles Davis, Michael Jackson, James Brown, etc. I find I constantly get influenced and inspired by different things I listen to and gigs that I go to see.
WHAT I’M LISTENING TO RIGHT NOW: Hiatus Kaiyote, Lianne La Havas, Snarky Puppy, Feist, the Olllam, Sia, Zero 7, Meg Mac, Smoke Fairies.
INSTRUMENTS PLAYED: Keyboards, drums, bass, guitar, percussion, and vocals.
MY BIG BREAK: I try not to think of anything I’m doing as my big break. While I’ve had some fantastic opportunities and achievements—one of the definite highlights of the last year was our performance with Annie Lennox where she sang a duet with Hozier at the Grammy Awards, as well as playing on Saturday Night Live—I believe in consistently working hard, never allowing yourself to get too comfortable, and to always keep yourself challenged musically.
LATEST ALBUM: My own project that I’m currently working on.
FAVORITE KEYBOARD GEAR: I love the Nord Stage 2—I use it onstage with Hozier. When it comes to studio stuff, I like a lot of vintage synths like the Moog Minimoog, Roland Jupiter-8, Roland TB-303, Sequential Circuits Prophet-5, and the Oberheim OB-XA.
WHAT’S NEXT: I’m currently touring with Hozier, with upcoming shows in the U.S. and Australia. I also write and produce with and for other artists, so I’ll be in the studio when the tour is finished, working on new material that I’m exited about.
ADVICE TO OTHER MUSICIANS: Keep yourself challenged and always be learning. I find the musicians who are the best at what they do are open, constantly learning and they don’t get cocky about what they do. Be open to opportunities that come your way. Don’t shut doors on yourself before you’ve given something a try.
