Key Secrets: Plug In, Play On

Keyboard insider tips from David Battino

Lately, I’ve been giving my rig an eBay upgrade, selling off under-used gear and using the cash to buy new synths and effects. My new Novation Bass Station II excels as both a synth and an effect: I’m getting wild grooves by running speech recordings through this analog monosynth’s filter and distortion, triggering its filter envelope with the arpeggiator. (The audio input functions as an extra oscillator.) This input feature also resurrected a cheesy old General MIDI module that wasn’t worth the effort of selling. The module’s sampled attacks add spice, the Bass Station’s analog filter warms up the sound, and now I can play chords, too.
