Two of my favorite music technologies are MIDI and low-res speech synthesis. So it was a treat to see them come together in midiTTS, a $2.99 iOS app from Intelligent Gadgets (intelligentgadgets.us). Paste in some text (spam email excerpts are ideal), tap “Spread,” and midiTTS assigns each word a pitch and corresponding MIDI Note Number. Then tap the screen or play your keyboard to make your iPad sing with a plaintive or gravelly voice. You’ll quickly come up with surprising riffs and phrases. For more character, drag the Variation slider to add pitch modulation. You can route midiTTS through the Audiobus app ($4.99) to apply effects and record your performances.
