A different sort of concept album, Halley’s Comet pays tribute to author Mark Twain via piano works linked to the famed writer and Twain-related quotes between performances. Hokey? Quite the opposite. Davis’ interpretations of Felix Kraemer’s “Mark Twain Mazurka” and Louis Moreau Gottschalk’s “The Banjo: Grotesque Fantasie” are vivid and virtuosic, and the quotes preceding each are mini history lessons to place the works in context. An unexpected pleasure. (Newport Classics, johndavispianist.com)
