“I didn’t know it would take this long to come out with something,” Dana Glover jokes just before singing to a packed house at New York’s Soho Apple Store, alongside saxophonist Dave Koz. Glover’s song “Start All Over Again” (from Koz’s recent release Hello Tomorrow) marks the pianist, singer, and songwriter’s much-anticipated return to the recorded stage—her first since her 2002 album Testimony. “And even though this is a song on Dave’s album and not mine, it’s my song—so it matters a lot to me.”

Testimony boldly announced Glover’s musical arrival on a grand scale, packing her signature punch of hook-laden songs, framed by powerhouse piano and vocal work, along with the always scintillating string arrangements of Paul Buckmaster. Songs like “Thinking Over” and “Rain” continue to garner her worldwide acclaim, nearly a decade after that album’s release. But Glover has been plotting her recorded return for years, honing her craft, one chorus at a time. “Since Testimony, I’ve worked with a bunch of different producers, always writing and staying passionate about the music,” she tells me. “I’m a different person than I was then, because we all change. In some ways, I feel right on time.”

Glover has reason to be excited of late. Her collaboration with Koz on “Start All Over Again” launched her back into the spotlight, with both guest appearances on the hit ABC series Desperate Housewives and a winter 2011 tour coming up. For Glover, it’s proof positive that a song sometimes has a mind of its own. “I had cut a demo of that song,” Glover says. “And when Dave heard it, he wanted it to sound like the demo. I went with it, because I believed in the song and thought that no matter how it was produced, the message would ring through. And it did.”

These days, Glover continues to focus her efforts squarely in the song department, crafting new material, oftentimes at her home piano. “My main goal is to make sure my songs are done well, and able to be heard,” she says. “Getting the chance to perform and connect with people again puts it all into perspective. I’m excited for what’s next.”
