Unity Audio to make Lisson Grove R124 compressor

June 27, 2014

Unity Audio Ltd are delighted and excited to announce that the fabulous Lisson Grove R-124 valve mono compressor will be made under license in the UK by Unity Audio Ltd.  The R-124 will be built to the exact same specification using the same components including the identical Sowter and Cinemag transformers, and identical Mullard valves. The Lisson Grove R-124 is based on EMI’s RS124 compressor, which, alongside the Fairchild 660, provided much of the dynamic control processing at Abbey Road Studios throughout the 1960s and beyond. The original RS124 was itself based around the American Altec 436, which EMI’s technical engineers modified to create a compressor that met with their very high standards. In 2010, this version of the RS124 design was produced and further modified by Lisson Grove, a US -based company formed by British Grammy Award-winning engineer/producer Hugo Nicolson, intent on ‘recapturing the finest studio sounds of yesteryear’.

Unity Audio's Kevin Walker explains: I was approached by Hugo at the winter Namm show as he was keen for Unity Audio to take over the manufacturing under a licensing arrangement. Hugo ideally wanted to concentrate on design rather than manufacturing and as Unity Audio has been manufacturing our own brand of studio monitors for some years now, we were keen to expand this side of the business further.

Production has already started and new R-124 will be available from August.

Price to be £2,395.00, $4,295.00, €2,875.00 all ex VAT.
