We recently caught up with Billy Joel's longtime keyboardist and technologist David Rosenthal, who graciously let us onstage for a tour of his all-new rig. His familiar stage keyboards--including Kurzweil K2600X and K2661 workstations and a Roland Fantom-G6, are now mainly used as controllers for a bevy of virtual instruments running on Apple MainStage and the Muse Research Receptor platform. Rosenthal's motto has always been "Do it once, do it right, and if it ain't broke, don't fix it," as evidenced by the fact that just a few short years ago, he was still rocking Opcode OMS feeding stacks of hardware sound modules. However, it was time to take advantage of all that today's best virtual instruments had to offer, so he took the plunge in his typical leave-nothing-to-chance fashion. (When you have a gig this heavy, there's no such thing as being too much of a perfectionist.)
