Sketchy [Doodlin Records]

As I listened to the first couple of tracks of jazz organist Wil Blade’s debut release, I found myself admiring his strong sound, his strong sense of swing, his idiomatic lines, his rock-solid pedal work, his enjoyable tunes, his excellent horn charts, and the way he touches the totem of the great ’60s jazz organ and groove groups. But with each successive cut, Wil reveals more of himself as composer and player. The grooves get deeper, the harmonic adventures longer, and the ballads more soulful the farther you get in this disc. Wil’s horn players and guitarist blow consistently great solos, and Idris Muhammad’s drumming is superb. Wil is a hell of an organ player. Seriously, there is some significant music on this CD.
