Roland Fantom-X

Using re-sampling to create perfect, elastic custom loops.

Ever wanted to make loops of beats and bass lines with out the mess of truncating and finding loop points? The Fantom-X’s “Re-sampling with stop trigger” trick makes perfect loops that can be seamlessly used in the Audio Track section of the Fantom-X.

To show you how it’s done, we’ll use a couple of the preset drum patterns in the RHYTHM section, re-sample them, and drop them into the audio tracks.

1. Press MIXER to put the Fantom in Performance mode, press F5 PERF LIST, and then select USER 01 SEQ TEMPLE. Press RHYTHM, then press and hold SHIFT while you touch RHYTHM and select P18 BIG BEAT.

2. Press SAMPLING above the blue Skip-Back button and select F2 Re-Sampling. Then Press F2 again to select AUTO-TRIG.

3. Cursor down to STOP TRIGGER and change it from MANUAL to BEAT with the DATA wheel. Cursor down to SAMPLING LENGTH and change it from 16 to 8.

4. Press PAD 9 to start the Rhythm Pattern and the sampler will start sampling. Once the sampler stops, Press PAD 9 again to stop the pattern.

5. Press and hold SHIFT and touch RHYTHM again, and select “P31 Tabla Phrases.” Repeat steps 2–4 to make a perfect loop of this pattern.

6. Press SONG EDIT and then F3 for AUDIO TRACK.

7. Press F6 INSERT; the Fantom-X should take you directly to the USER sample list. If not, then PRESS F2 for USER.

8. Use the cursor keys to highlight the first re-sampled loop and press F8 SELECT. The Fantom-X will ask, “Extend the song length, are you sure?” Press F8 EXC. Press F8 COPY. The Fantom-X will ask you “Extend the song length, are you sure?” Press F8 EXC.

9. Select Track 2 of the Audio Tracks and repeat steps 7–8.

These same steps can be used to make perfect loops of riffs from the arpeggiator as well. Another great feature of the Audio Track section of the Fantom-X is real-time time-stretching of audio; the tempo of the loops we just made can be changed at any time. Happy looping!
