Moving on from the 20-year jam phenomenon of Phish, keyboard polymath Page McConnell writes his own rules with a debut album.

Swimming Solo

September, 2007

Twisting knobs and leaning into the keyboard, Page McConnell make his Moog Music Little Phatty scream. His bandmates wrench similarly intense sounds out of their own instruments as their leader continues to grind knobs and punch buttons, fueling the grit and energy coming out of his own axe. As everything crescendos and the crowd at San Francisco’s Fillmore cheers with sympathetically increasing elation, Page’s left hand shoots out and effortlessly finds a cluster of notes on the Yamaha Motif 8 to his left. And just like that, the jam transitions smoothly and he’s back pulling out rich, rocking piano chords and singing refrains from his new solo album. The build and release is timed perfectly, and the crowd shouts again in approval.
