Rudder

Rudder [Nineteen/Eight Records]

Henry Hey is one of those deep players whose work never fails to impress. As Rudder, he and several other kick-butt road dogs (drummer Keith Carlock, reedman Chris Cheek, bassist Tim Lefebvre) dish up an aggressive yet melodic sound that evokes Weather Report in organization and spirit on one hand and the Chemical Brothers in production creativity. Killer grooves, sonics stretched to the point of breakdown, and plenty of stellar synth and keyboard work combine to give this disc an intriguing dark mood. Jazzers as sound manglers? Bring it on.
