Use classic influences to shape your rock piano playing.

Pages From the Past

| September, 2007

Multi-keyboardist Page McConnell reaches back into the pages of music history for his solo on “Back In The Basement”. Sources can be traced to blues artists of years gone by, gospel music, jazz pianist and big band leader Count Basie, and jazz pianists Oscar Peterson and Horace Silver.

Though you may not immediately think of these legendary players and styles when it comes to contemporary rock piano, it’s no surprise that Page draws inspiration from such sources; though he does play primarily in a rock genre, he has also cited players from Monk to Fats Waller and Bill Evans as important influences. Building on great music of the past gives Page’s performance a rock solid foundation, from which he spins his present day soliloquy.
The main riff upon which Page builds “Back In The Basement” has some striking similarities to classic elements of jazz piano. Check out the examples below for more.
