As promised in our feature on Mutemath in the March 2012 issue, keyboardist and frontman Paul Meany gives us the grand tour of his vintage-meets-modern keyboard rig. In the third clip, he discusses both how growing up in New Orleans influenced his music, and even more interestingly, how early experiments with sampling and beatboxes served as a gateway to learning to play the sampled phrases note by note. The full text of the interview will appear online by the end of March.

Do you employ soft synths as part of a live performance rig?
Yes, soft synths are what I mainly use.
Yes, as an adjunct to a mainly hardware keyboard rig.
No, I gig strictly with hardware synths, digital piano, etc.
No, because I don't perform live.
