One word seemed to sum up the keyboard action this year: REAL. Korg released a real analog MS-20 that sounds just like the original. Vintage Vibe has a real Clavinet to go with their stellar electric tine pianos. Hammond has a new real mini-Leslie with upper and lower rotors. For a real acoustic keyboard instrument unlike any other, check out the handcrafted Wheelharp from Antiquity Music. (Can it be long before The Edison acquires one?) Of course, DSP-based synthesis had some strong new contenders as well, including Dave Smith's huge new Prophet-12 (which has digital/modeled oscillators but analog filters), Muse Research's honkin' new top-end Receptor built around an Intel Core i7 chip, and the KingKorg takes bang-for-buck to a new level in a virtual analog synth.
