I’ve used NeKos on many TV gigs —
the Oscars, the Emmys, the Grammys. I
showed it to Herbie Hancock and Stevie
Wonder. They flipped out. They have
every keyboard known, so it was cool to
have something they didn’t. [Laughs.] I’m
sure the next time I go to Herbie’s, he’ll
have three of ’em! I also used a Yamaha
Motif ES8 and a Korg Triton Extreme. I
can pretty much cover everything with all
of those.
As to the stage sound, I mixed everything
through a Mackie 12-channel mixer
that lived next to the Leslie [See photo on
page 21. –Ed.], but splits were taken before
that for the front-of-house. I had in-ear monitors,
and also a wedge which was mainly
to hear the Leslie properly. Michael Bearden
