Marge Adler (Unsigned Artist of the Month)

Michael Gallant

“I am quite possibly the love child of George Winston and Peter Schickele,” writes Ohio-based composer, arranger, and pianist Marge Adler. Playing on a close-miked Steinway in a Gothic church sanctuary, Marge creates musical stories on Balm in Gilead by intertwining, overlaying, and reharmonizing themes from varyingly disparate source material; “All Through the Night,” for example, combines the Welsh hymn by the same name with Steinberg’s “Shalom Rav,” Gruber’s “Silent Night,” and a J.S. Bach Prelude, among other melodies. “My goal is to celebrate shared experience,” says Marge. “Bridging gaps that are stylistic, generational, cultural.”
