Live at Tonic [Ropeadope Records]

Marco Benevento has made a name for himself playing mostly organ in a stellar duo with drummer Joe Russo. On this Live at Tonic triple disc, Benevento showcases his keyboard chops in a way he never has before, stepping boldly into the spotlight primarily on acoustic piano. Highlights are plentiful as Benevento jams out on originals and covers as diverse as Monk’s “Bye Ya,” Spencer Davis’ “Gimme Some Lovin’,” and even Carly Simon’s James Bond classic “Nobody Does it Better.” He plays some songs solo, but most of the time collaborates with luminaries such as Phish’s Mike Gordon, JFJO’s Reed Mathis, bandmate Russo, and the esteemed Matt Chamberlain on drums. The album is an adventurous romp across many musical genres and the discs are as inspiring as they are enjoyable to listen to. This is a tonic that will serve you well.
