From the grooving opening salvo of “Get Innocuous,” this album meshes the best elements of funk and disco with a cheeky sense of playfulness. “Time to Get Away” feels like the Talking Heads joining the Scissor Sisters, while the awesome jam “North American Scum” should make you both proud and scared to be a resident of this continent. Murphy’s synth expertise produces a wide palette of electronic sounds, such as the humongous bass on the new wave song “Someone Great,” which he juxtaposes with tight, arpeggiated synth melodies running throughout. Murphy can pull off the beautiful mood of that song, and then turn around and rock every booty in the house, as he has been doing live on stages worldwide. |
