Creating timed-modulation effects using RPPR (Realtime Pattern Play & Record).

This cool tip lets you modulate a sequencer track’s sound or effects in real time, perfectly synced to your Song’s tempo. We do this by creating a “riff” of Continuous Controller data in Pattern Mode and assign it to an RPPR key. Here’s how:

1. Decide which parameter you want to modulate and find its CC value by looking at the controller assignment list (P4, Controller Tab) or the manual. Let’s use CC74, Filter Cutoff, for this example.

2. Go to P6, Pattern/RPPR, and select the Pattern Edit Tab. Choose an unused USER Pattern and then select Step Recording from the Upper RH menu. The default Pattern length is 1-bar, but you can change that if you like.

3. Step-enter one measure of notes at the rhythmic value(s) you want. The note you choose doesn’t matter.

4. After pressing “Done” go back to the Upper RH Menu and choose Event Edit.

5. Now highlight a note, push the Value Slider to the top and then decrement down three times so you’ve chosen CTRL.

6. Set the controller number you want (74) and set a value for it — for this example alternate between 000 and 127.

7. After pressing “Done” go to the RPPR Setup tab and assign this Pattern to C#2 and point it to the Track you want to modulate. Set the Mode to MANUAL.

8. Now be sure the RPPR box is checked on P0 and play your sound live on the keyboard. Whenever you press the C#2 you’ll introduce your synced modulation — it’s that easy. Try playing the C#2 key in different ways to explore the realtime fun you can have.

9. Explore all the possible controllers and effect modulations you can, making additional USER patterns and assigning them to adjacent RPPR keys as you go. Some favorite controllers include: Filter Cutoff (CC74), Filter Resonance (CC71), Panning (CC10), automating the onboard controllers (Ribbon is CC16, JS-Y is CC02, JS+Y is CC01 etc.).

10. If you want to modulate Insert or Master Effect parameters you should assign a Dynamic Modulation source (DMOD) to the parameter (go to the Edit Page for the given effect you want to work with, and pick an unused source like FXCtrl1 or 2, which are CC12 and 13) and a modulation amount, and then you can use that CC in your Pattern recording. Record the step-entered controllers and then go back to the effect edit page and adjust the modulation settings as needed.

11. Be sure to save your SONG and have fun!
