Keyboard Contributing Editor Francis Preve and Vernon Reid Team Up with the John Lennon Songwriting BusAugust, 2007At the Summer NAMM show in Austin, Keyboard’s own Francis Preve conducted a seminar with legendary guitarist Vernon Reid on the John Lennon Educational Bus. Working with a group of six Austin area high school students, Preve and Reid created a slammin’ hip-hop inflected pop jam in record time - six hours to be exact. “It’s no secret that I really enjoy working with the next generation of musicians and this year’s group was a genuinely talented bunch. Vernon Reid is an amazing collaborator with chops to spare, so it was a killer combination.” quipped Preve. “Believe it or not, we had the track finished a half hour *ahead* of schedule, due in no small part to the engineering assistance of John Lennon staffers like Jesse Jensema, Jacob Voelzke and Tyler Winick.” Granted, it certainly didn’t hurt that they were also working with Ableton Live - one of the top software packages for real-time composition and production. Add to that the fact that Francis is one of Ableton’s primary sound designers and Vernon is an avid Live fan - and it all comes together. Only a few years ago, a project this ambitious would have taken several days. Truly remarkable times in which we live! |
