As organists, how do we imply a lot of harmony out of the limited number of voices that results from our left hand often having to double on bass duty? How do we communicate a wide range of emotions? In general, the answer lies in excellent voice-leading and having a solid knowledge of harmony so as to see a variety of possibilities at any one given moment. The following examples are all based on the first four bars of Irving Berlin’s classic song “How Deep Is the Ocean.” Let’s look at five different one-handed accompaniment approaches to it. I’ve included the bass lines for reference purposes.
