Highlights from IMSTA Festa 2012

IMSTA is an educational and outreach organization whose primary mission is to convince us that using pirated music production software is, well ... lame. Once a year, though, they hold a day of music production clinics, panels, and gear demos at the SAE Institute, a recording and music production college that's literally across from the Macy's of "Miracle on 34th Street" fame in New York City. Editor Stephen Fortner attended, sat on a panel with rap luminaries Hank Shocklee and 9th Wonder and Jay-Z engineer Young Guru, and then made the rounds checking out the latest.

Do you require expansion card slots INSIDE your studio computer?
 No, because I use a laptop or "mini" machine and rely on USB and/or FireWire
 No, because I use Thunderbolt peripherals
 I'd prefer expansion slots, but can live with workarounds like a PCI expansion chassis
 Yes, I absolutely require that my main music machine have expansion slots
