Funkadelic Fills

Melodic motifs make for massive motion.

“Flash Light” is based on a simple ii-V progression, underneath which Bernie Worrell weaves the fabulously funky bass line you see transcribed on the following pages. His descending eighth-note line imparts a feeling of forward motion, and you can hardly wait for the resolution on each downbeat. Instead of simply repeating this pattern over and over, though, Bernie spices it up by using fills and rhythmic variation that aim to get us back to the one. He also extends his descending pattern through the F7, and sometimes reverses direction, too. Let’s extract some of Bernie’s musical devices, practice them in all keys, and then you can apply them to your own music.

These audio and MIDI files correspond to the lessons and full song transcription beginning on page 46 of the November 2007 issue of Keyboard. All files performed by Scott Healy.
