Even though the Minimoog on which he plays is monophonic and doesn’t have velocity sensitivity, Chick manages to pull tremendous expression from the instrument — check out his use of pitch and modulation throughout, as well as the speedy lines he creates in measures 7–10, 18–20, and 30–35. Also particularly impressive is how Chick articulates his playing in the final 12 bars of the song, switching back and forth between rapid legato phrases, short two-note gestures, and ear-catching staccato hits. Be sure to listen to the original recording to hear just how fluid his playing can be.
