Derek Sherinian

Need proof that the keyboard can rock as hard as any guitar out there? Bathe in the Blood of the Snake and find what you’re looking for. Derek Sherinian’s newest prog metal recording is a showcase of searing synth tones, tightly-arranged compositions, and heavy Satriani-esque virtuosity. Featuring guest spots from Billy Idol (for whom Derek regularly plays keys), Zakk Wylde, Slash, and Yngwie Malmsteen, the synth hero’s tracks have enough epic rock energy to get fists pumping, yet carefully steer clear of unnecessary wankage. Perhaps most surprising on the disk is a mellow, jazzy “On the Moon,” which showcases Derek’s acoustic piano work. Relentless and cathartic, Blood of the Snake is a rich treat indeed.
