Storied producer Dallas Austin wanted a drum machine that did everything he liked about his classic gear, and also added a lot more sounds and functionality, and was easier to use than all the gear he cut his teeth on. So he did what any rational musician would do: He helped design his own. Witness the Beat Thang, which just might be the coolest groove box since the fabled Akai MPC series.

Do you employ soft synths as part of a live performance rig?
 Yes, soft synths are what I mainly use.
 Yes, as an adjunct to a mainly hardware keyboard rig.
 No, I gig strictly with hardware synths, digital piano, etc.
