Cooking With Chord TonesDeconstruct Michel’s playing to build your own diatonic chordal chaos. Few pianists, whether classical or jazz, can pull as much beauty or thunder out of a piano as Michel Camilo. Thanks to his amazing technique, he can clearly articulate sixteenth-note passages of right-hand block chords at blazing speeds. At the core of Michel’s many musical achievements are his Latin jazz roots, which he draws upon so effectively in his original compositions “Tropical Jam” and “Hurry Up And Wait.” In these recordings, Michel is, in the words of my longtime friend and sax great Jerry Bergonzi, really “cooking with chord tones.” Let’s delve into Michel’s musical prescription for our own tropical jams. |
