Arturia showed off the non-working but oh-so-cool prototype of their Axel Hartmann-designed hardware synth, the Origin Keyboard. The flip-up panel is in fact an Origin module, which features a ton of programmable controls, leaving the keyboard itself very clean. Yes, that’s a ribbon controller!
The appearance of the Origin Keyboard prototype made it clear where Arturia’s headed. Like the Origin module introduced at NAMM, the Origin keyboard combines just about all of Arturia’s software synths in one knob-encrusted controller. This stylin’ synth takes things a bit further: You’ll be able to mix and match modules from on soft synth with those of any other. Imagine taking one oscillator from the CS-80V, running it through the filters of the Moog Modular V, then connecting that to the envelopes of the ARP 2600V. The Origin Keyboard has serious I/O, with stereo audio inputs and eight auxiliary outs in addition to the stereo outs, and also hooks up to your computer via USB 2.0 so you can use the synths as VST or AU plug-ins. Factor in the multiple joystick modes, seriously deep LFOs, and 32-step sequencer, and you’ve got a synth to be reckoned with. It’s said to be scheduled to ship in December.
