Little bitty tips

Alesis Andromeda

The Andromeda has a bunch of minor but very cool features tucked away in dusty corners of its menu system; heck, with all those knobs, it’s easy to forget that there’s a menu system at all.

1. The Andromeda’s display helpfully updates to show parameters associated with the button or knob you just touched. Most of the time this is great, sometimes it’s an annoyance. Hold down soft button 7 and then touch 8 to lock the display. Repeat to unlock it again.

2. There are two auto-tuning routines, one tied into the temperature of the oscillator chips and another scheme called background tuning. Having both turned on all the time keeps the Andromeda nicely in tune, but a touch sterile for some tastes. Touch Auto Tune, then soft button 1, and experiment with defeating just one of the two tuning routines; each is capable of keeping the Andromeda in tune on its own. BKTUNE status is on soft knob 2, TMPTUNE on soft knob 3.

3. Often overlooked is that fact that you can navigate horizontally through many of the menus simply by repeatedly pressing the soft button that selected the page you’re currently on. Try it: get into one of the oscillator menus, then touch soft button 2 to move to the next parameter on the right with each subsequent touch.

4. For a speedier way to name your patches, touch Store, then soft button 8 for Name. Move the cursor under the first character, then turn soft knob 7 (“Names”) fully clockwise. The name field is now blank, ready for your clever, evocative patch name.
