“When I was 13 and home sick from school,” says this 15-year-old singer-songwriter
from Massachusetts, “I started writing a song, and instantly fell
in love with songwriting. Ever since then, it’s been my passion, and my
dream to record and publish my songs.”
First memory of piano: My brother started taking piano lessons when he
was eight. I was five, and I’d listen to him practice. I instantly became
intrigued and began to play his lessons by ear.
Musical heroes: I was instantly attracted to the unique sounds of John Ondrasik, Carole King, and Sara Bareilles. Other influences
include Jack Johnson, Taylor Swift, Nick Jonas, Colbie Caillat, and John Mayer.
Why piano? I think everything happens for a reason. Piano is part of me, and it was bound to emerge sometime or other. I played flute
in fifth grade band, but stopped when the school year ended. So far, no instrument has inspired me as much as piano.
Favorite music to play? I’m classically trained, but pop is my favorite. I tend to gravitate towards faster music—sometimes I get bored
with slower songs. I enjoy learning compositions by Yanni, Carole King, and Scott Joplin.
Keyboard you own or want: I presently own an Everett upright piano and a Yamaha DGX620 keyboard. My dream is to own a Steinway.
They have such a beautiful, fulfilling sound. It would be amazing to be able to play a Steinway every single day!
How important is traditional training? Extremely. If someone can learn classical music, they can learn anything. Whether you’re playing
jazz, rock, or funk, it’s vital. It’s like learning to walk before you run.
